M-KOPA grew from a simple observation: a small mobile payment, sent over an ordinary phone network, could let people buy useful things in tiny instalments instead of paying upfront. That insight became a lending platform that has extended more than US$1.5 billion in credit. It has helped over 5 million people in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa buy good-quality smartphones, use digital services and move closer to their money goals. Repayments are small and frequent, timed to match how our customers actually earn, and our products are adapted to each market we serve.
