Job Description

M-KOPA, the Africa-focused fintech behind flexible financing for smartphones and electric motorbikes, is recruiting a permanent Senior Backend Engineer for its Asset Sales group. The team looks after a core part of the company’s financing platform, the software that lets everyday earners across the continent obtain devices and vehicles on manageable credit. The company reports serving more than ten million customers and unlocking over two billion dollars in credit.

This is a full-time, fully remote position open to candidates based in Nairobi, Accra, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Kampala or Lagos. You will work with colleagues spread across the United Kingdom, Europe and Africa, so availability during core GMT hours matters. The company stresses results over hours logged.

The platform is written in C# on .NET, deployed as distributed microservices on Azure and orchestrated with Kubernetes. Services communicate through events, with Azure Service Bus carrying much of that traffic. Teams watch production through Grafana, Azure Application Insights, logs, traces and metrics. They use Claude and other AI assistants for design thinking, coding, reviewing, testing and incident analysis.

M-KOPA wants someone who enjoys experimenting with new tooling and passing useful discoveries to teammates. Ownership is a central theme. Engineers shape an idea, build it, ship it, then keep refining it once real traffic arrives. Automated tests, service level objectives, alerting and deployment checks surround every release. Engineers join on-call rotations as a way of learning how systems behave, not as a test of heroics.

Beyond the work itself, the package includes a personal training budget, a home office allowance, coaching and professional development programs, family-friendly policies, flexible arrangements and wellbeing support. The company has been named by the Financial Times among Africa’s fastest-growing firms and has appeared in CNBC and TIME rankings. If you want your engineering to widen financial access for under-banked communities, this opening deserves your application.

Responsibilities

Design, build and run distributed C# and .NET microservices on Azure that support the Asset Sales financing journey.
Turn business ideas into working software, taking each change from first sketch through implementation, release and production tuning.
Develop event-driven workflows using Azure Service Bus or comparable brokers, and keep message flows dependable under heavy load.
Engineer for imperfect conditions by handling duplicate deliveries, retries, delayed or out-of-sequence events and partial outages without corrupting data.
Look after the infrastructure your services depend on, including container deployments on Kubernetes and supporting cloud resources.
Read dashboards, traces and logs in Grafana and Application Insights to confirm that shipped features behave as intended for real customers.
Define and maintain service level objectives and alerts so that degradation is detected before users notice.
Write automated tests and enforce deployment safeguards so frequent releases stay safe.
Take part in the on-call Rota, investigate incidents calmly and convert each lesson into a lasting platform improvement.
Use AI assistants, including Claude, throughout your daily workflow for exploring designs, drafting and reviewing code, producing tests, diagnosing faults and writing clear technical notes.
Experiment with new agents and tools, evaluate them honestly and share the approaches that work with the wider engineering group.
Review colleagues’ code constructively and mentor less experienced engineers.
Communicate decisions, trade-offs and progress clearly in writing and in calls across several time zones.
Practice the team’s Campfire Rule by leaving every system, repository and runbook slightly healthier than you found it.
Work with product managers, analysts and operations colleagues to understand customer needs and prioritise work that delivers measurable value.
Contribute to architectural discussions, challenge assumptions respectfully and help set technical direction for the Asset Sales area.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience demonstrated through a strong delivery record.
Solid, hands-on command of C# and the .NET platform in production environments.
Practical background building microservices, preferably hosted on Azure and run on Kubernetes.
Working knowledge of event-driven design with Azure Service Bus, or a similar technology such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.
Demonstrated use of observability tools such as Grafana or Application Insights to explain how live systems behave.
Experience taking responsibility for production services, including participation in on-call support.
Track record of everyday use of AI tooling for design, review, testing or incident work.
Proven success collaborating within distributed teams across time zones.
Ability to work during core GMT hours from one of the listed locations.
Legal eligibility to work in your country of residence. M-KOPA conducts pre-employment checks covering identity, criminal records, academic qualifications, employment dates and references.
