Job Description
This position is hands-on and carries real ownership. As finance lead for the Kenyan entity, you will run the monthly close, produce the management reporting pack with clear executive commentary, maintain the IFRS 9 expected credit loss model, and keep treasury and compliance matters in order. Beyond the numbers, you will work closely with commercial colleagues to test unit economics, model product launches and shape pricing and supply choices that go before leadership and the board.
The role suits an accountant who enjoys both the technical depth of lending-sector accounting and the pace of a fast-growing business. Expect demanding close periods and thorough audit cycles, balanced by the chance to strengthen controls, introduce automation and influence how the entity reports and decides. You will also gain exposure to Kenya's mobile-money-driven fintech environment and its evolving regulatory landscape, working alongside local and regional leaders.
M-KOPA supports its people through coaching partnerships, development programs, flexible working and family-friendly policies. The company has been recognized several times by the Financial Times among Africa's fastest-growing businesses, and by CNBC and TIME. If you want your judgement to shape how a flagship entity reports, controls and plans, this is a rare opportunity to build something lasting.
Experience
Responsibilities
• Prepare the monthly management reporting pack and write concise executive commentary that explains performance to non-finance leaders.
• Produce variance analysis that separates Kenya-specific market effects from one-off items, so decision-makers see the true drivers.
• Own the IFRS 9 expected credit loss model, including assumptions, staging, back-testing and documentation for auditors.
• Track the loan book daily and monthly, analyzing repayment behavior by customer cohort and reporting provisioning and bad debt trends.
• Support statutory and regulatory reporting, including preparing schedules and responding to auditor and regulator queries from file preparation to sign-off.
• Maintain documentation for funding facilities, lender covenants and compliance processes, and assist with due diligence exercises when required.
• Manage treasury matters such as cash positioning, mobile-money collections reconciliation and currency exposure.
• Partner with the commercial team to challenge unit economics, build financial cases for new products, and assess pricing and supply decisions.
• Build multi-scenario Excel models and present conclusions to the CFO, lenders and the board.
• Apply IFRS 16, IAS 21 and revenue recognition standards correctly, and prepare the entity for the transition to IFRS 18.
• Identify opportunities to automate recurring finance tasks, tighten internal controls and shorten close timelines.
• Coach and guide junior finance staff, and coordinate with regional finance colleagues on group reporting deadlines.
Qualifications
• A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, commerce, economics or a related discipline.
• Verifiable experience leading statutory and management reporting cycles, including full ownership of audit processes from preparation to auditor query resolution.
• Strong working command of IFRS 9, IFRS 16, IAS 21 and revenue recognition, applied in a real reporting environment rather than theory alone.
• Training at a Big 4 firm (PwC, Deloitte, EY or KPMG) is a strong advantage.
• Exposure to Kenyan lending, fintech or asset-financing businesses is welcome, though not mandatory; curiosity and commercial judgement count more.
• Willingness to pass pre-employment background checks covering identity, academic credentials, employment history, references and criminal records.
Skills
• Practical expected credit loss modelling and the ability to defend assumptions to auditors.
• Clear written and spoken communication that turns complex results into simple recommendations for executives and lenders.
• Commercial thinking: reading unit economics, margins and pricing levers and linking them to strategy.
• Strong grasp of month-end close mechanics, reconciliations and internal control design.
• Comfort with large datasets and finance systems, with an eye for automation that saves time.
• Stakeholder management across finance, commercial, legal and regional teams.
• Attention to detail under deadline pressure, with sound judgement on accounting estimates.
• Leadership and coaching ability for developing junior team members.
• Adaptability in a scaling business where priorities can shift between strategic presentations and debugging a provisioning model.
